Phonics: Students will continue learning letters and sounds. We will focus on the letters i, u, c, o, a, g, d, and s. At home, continue to practice saying the names of letters and the sounds they make. Also, practice writing the letters carefully and neatly. Reading: This month we will focus on listening to stories, discussing the stories with our peers, and answering questions about the stories we’ve read. We will also introduce the concept of problem and solution. At home, please read every night. After reading, ask your child questions about what happened in the book. Have your child identify the characters, setting, problem and solution. Writing: In writing we will be working on opinion writing. We will learn what an opinion is and how to give a reason to explain why we have that opinion. Students will have opportunities to share with their ideas verbally using complete sentences and will begin writing their own sentences. We will also be working on drawing a picture that matches and supports their writing. Math: Students will work on comparing numbers to 5. We will use the terms greater than, less than and equal to compare sets of objects. At home, show your child two sets of objects (Cheerios, toy cars, etc.). Ask your child which group has more/less. Then ask them how they know. Encourage your child to speak in full sentences. Social Studies: Students will continue studying our school community. We will understand that our school is a community that we are a part of. At home: talk to your child about places in the school building and friends they’ve made. Science: Students will be working on the needs of living things. We will be learning about plants and discuss what they need to thrive. At home: read books or watch videos about plants. Skill of the Month: Practice putting on cold weather clothing and zipping coats.
